Common Questions

Quick answers to frequently asked gardening questions

Most outdoor plants need watering once or twice a week during the growing season. Check 2–3 cm below the surface — if dry, water. Established plants in the ground need less than containers.
Late winter to early spring is ideal for most shrubs, just before new growth begins. Summer-flowering shrubs are best pruned in early spring; spring-flowering ones right after flowering.
Hostas, ferns, astilbe, hellebores, and hydrangeas thrive in shade. Differentiate between full shade and dappled shade — most shade-lovers prefer at least some indirect light.
Adding organic matter is the best approach. Work compost, well-rotted manure, or leaf mould into the top 30 cm. This improves drainage in clay soils and water retention in sandy soils.
